Government Increase Public Sector Basepay And Minimum Wage By 10%
The National Tripartite Committee (NTC) has increased the daily minimum wage by 10% over the existing figure of Ghs 18.15. Following the increase which was reached by an agreement by the NTC comprising the representatives of Government, Employers Association and Organised Labour, the 2025 minimum wage stands at Ghs 19.97.
The minimum wage is the lowest amount payable to a worker in Ghana and it is determined by the national tripartite committee pursuant to Section 113 (1)(a) of the Labour Act, 2003 (Act 651).
The government and organised labour also signed an agreement to increase the base pay for public sector workers. Both increments were announced on Thursday, 20th February 2025, will be implemented from January to December 2025.
The recent negotiations had a unique touch with the presence of His Excellency, John Dramani Mahama, President of Ghana joining the parties to reach the deal. In his remarks, the President assured organized labour that when the Government settles and put the economy back on track, workers will have a better pay.
Also present were Hon. Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson, Minister of Finance, Hon. Dr. Abdul-Rashid Pelpuo, Minister of Labour, Jobs and Employment, representatives of Ghana Employers Association and of Organized Labour.
The increase has sparked a wave of agitations and anxiety among employees of the Judicial Service who wondered whether they are part of the 10% increase. The General Secretary of JUSAG, Abdulai Yakubu in a statement issued clarified that the 10% increase is for only workers under the single spine pay policy (SSPP) and does not affect Judicial Service workers.
He added that “the salaries and Conditions of Service of Judicial Service are determined by the President on the advice of the Judicial Council as provided under Article 149 of the Constitution.”
He assured members that JUSAG is still engaging Management and the Government to conclude the review of the salaries and related allowances for Judicial Service Staff.
